Recorded in 2013, Familiar Ground is the debut EP from Venice Music (moniker of Melbourne-based musician Ryan Downey). Mixed and mastered by producer Casey Rice (Dirty Three, Tortoise) and with contributions from Jim Lawrie on drums and backing vocals, Simon Lawrie on bass, Sarinah Masukor on violin and The Berry St Choir, it offers a collection of four songs, bold in their vision and conviction; music for brave people, and for people that want to be brave.
------- Praise for 'Familiar Ground' -------
"★★★★" - The Music
"Haunting, with a voice of such darkened depth that we're drawn immediately in." - Mess + Noise
"Expansive...cinematic...at almost six and a half minutes it's quite an achievement to keep that tension going." - Robbie Buck (ABC Radio National) on 'The One'
"Do you love a live performance that leaves you lost for words? Enter Ryan Downey, a true treasure of Melbourne. With creations such as 'The One,' (he) produces a dark twist on alternative folk, his rich, suave baritone paints a black beauty aesthetic rather akin to The Prince of Darkness, Nick Cave." - Tonedeaf
